Ilja Iljitsch Metschnikov
15th of April 1845 - 15th of August 1916
Professor for Biology in Odessa and since 1890 at the Institute Pateur in Paris. He studied the origins of toxines and of the antitoxines of the cholera-germ (vibrio cholerae). In the year 1883 he introduced the theory of phagocytosis of bacteria by white blood cells (lymphocytes).
He shared the Nobel Price for Physiology and Medicine of the year 1908 with Paul Ehrlich.
